Measures to support small-scale fisheries in European waters of the Mediterranean Sea

On Wednesday, November 2nd  2016  was successfully held in Cyprus (Limassol) an informative seminar relating the project with the title ‘MEASURES TO SUPPORT SMALL SCALE FISHERIES’ (MARE / 2014/04 -SI2.723876) funded by European Commission and the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The aim of the seminar would be the empowerment of the small scale fisheries sector.

The seminar was organized by AP MARINE Environmental Consultancy Ltd team (contractor of the EU pilot project). At the seminar, Mr. Yiannos Kyriacou was attended as representative  of the Field Controls and Structures of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of Cyprus (DFMR),  Mr. Nick Anagnopoulos President & CEO and the Mrs Penny Anastasaki Project Officer - EU expert were attended as representatives of the company APC s.a. (Greek consulting company, contractor and responsible for the coordination of the EU pilot project), and also 42 fishermen from all registered categories (A, B, C) were attended along with members  of Fishing Associations.

AP MARINE executives presented the purpose and the targets of the pilot, the Director of AP MARINE presented the role of the MEDITERRANEAN ADVISORY COUNCIL (MEDAC), the President of the Pancyprian Association of professional fishermen Christodoulos Charalampous presented the problems of coastal fisheries in the region and also  the representative of the DFMR presented  the funding opportunities for fishermen and their collective organizations under EMFF. Lastly, Mr. Yiannos Stylianou, President of Professional Fishermen Association of Zygi, analyzed how it feels to be a member at LIFE platform since the association of Zygi recently became a member. In the discussion that followed, fishermen and their representatives were participated very actively.
